English Bull Dog Lab Mix – A Truly Awesome Family Dog

Last Updated on November 11, 2023 by Linda Richard

If you’re on a quest to finding a good pet for your kids, you should definitely consider the English bull dog lab mix – a truly awesome family dog. A cross between two of the most popular and most child-friendly dog breeds out there, the English Bullador is a very rewarding companion for any family with children.

At the same time, however, this is not the easiest dog to look after which is why it’s not often recommended for rookies. The English bulldog lab mix has a few know-how requirements and needs a well-researched and experienced owner. It’s a fairly new crossbreed too so the exact physical and personality specifics you can expect aren’t overly consistent.

The Main Physical Characteristics Of The English Bulldog Lab Mix

The first thing to note when talking about the English bulldog lab mix is that it’s different from the American Bullador as well as from Labrabulls, i.e. Labrador retriever and pit bull mixes. All these are different breeds with very different characteristics, especially where physicality is concerned.

For example, the English Bullador is considerably smaller on average than the American Bullador. That’s because American bulldogs are larger than their English counterparts on average.

So, an English Bullador will typically be between 17 and 20 inches tall (43 to 50 cm) and will weigh somewhere between 50 and 90 pounds (23 to 40 kg). Those are the average numbers between Labrador retrievers and English bulldogs. However, some variation is still very much possible depending on the parents. Either way, the English Bullador is always a medium-to-large-sized breed.

As for their coats, the English bulldog and lab mixes usually have a short and dense coat. Only rarely will they have a medium-length coat. Color-wise, it’s typically a dual- or tri-color combination of white, black, brown, brindle, or tan. Single-color Bulladors are rare, gorgeous, and highly valued.

An important note on the coat is that it’s not hypoallergenic – don’t be fooled by its short length. These dogs are not suitable for people with allergies. On the bright side, taking care of their coats is very easy as a weekly brushing is usually enough. Due to their Labrador lineage they also usually love water and getting baths.

The Unique Personality Of The English Bulldog and Lab Mix

This is arguably the best aspect of the English bulldog lab mix breed. As both English bulldogs and Labrador retrievers are phenomenal family pets that do great with children, so are English Bulladors. These dogs are smart, gentle, loving, loyal, and natural people-pleasers. They even tend to do well with strangers and with large crowds.

Of course, this doesn’t negate the need for obedience training and socialization. These are always a must for a well-behaved and well-adjusted dog. However, it does mean that the process is easier and more effective with this breed than with most others.

Does that mean that English Bulladors are easy to train? Not necessarily. While Labradors are very easy to train, English bulldogs can sometimes be a bit stubborn and strong-willed. So, if your Bullador takes more from that side of its family tree, it may be a bit more self-minded too. That’s not too much of an issue for an experienced dog owner, however.

Another note should be on this breed’s high intelligence. On one hand, it makes these dogs very interactive and fun to play with. On the other hand, it makes separation anxiety an issue – English Bulladors really don’t like being left home alone. So, if you work outside of home, it’d be good if other family members are home when you’re not. This is another reason why Bulladors are recommended as family pets.

Choosing Healthy Bullador Puppies and What To Watch Out For

The English bulldog lab mix is neither too sickly nor an impressively healthy breed. With the right care and a bit of luck, these dogs can easily go beyond their average lifespan of 10 to 12 years. However, the main issues you should watch out for include:

The way to avoid most or all of these includes several steps. Naturally, the most intuitive ones include 1) a proper diet, 2) regular exercise, and 3) routine vet check-ups. However, another big thing many people ignore is where you’re getting the pups from.

We strongly recommend avoiding pet stores and puppy mills as their dogs are almost always unhealthy. Instead, shopping from a reputable breeder is a guarantee for a healthy dog with no negative genetic predispositions. Such breeders will always give you health certificates for the pup as well as its parents.

The Impressive Energy Of The English Bulldog and Lab Mix

The English Bullador is almost always a highly energetic dog. This energetic nature can express itself in different ways, however. If your Bullador takes more from its Labrador parent then it will be a dog with lots of endurance and a great jogging partner. If the bulldog side of the Bullador is more prominent, then the dog will be highly energetic in short bursts but easily tired.

On average, Bulladors will need 60 to 90 minutes of active run time outdoors. This should be coupled with as much fenced yard time as the dog needs. Giving your Bullador plenty of exercise is important as these dogs are prone to obesity.

Is The English Bull Dog Lab Mix Right For You?

All in all, the English Bullador is great for families but is recommended for experienced dog owners. This isn’t to say that you can’t deal with this dog if you’re a first-time dog owner, of course. You’ll just need to be well-researched and be prepared for training this often-strong-willed dog. Proper healthcare is also important. It’s also advisable to watch out for overly hot or cold climates as these dogs can also have problems with their breathing.

I know that all dog breeds are different, but Labradors exude a special energy, don’t they? I believe everyone deserves the unconditional love of a pet, so my main goal is to make sure you can experience it.
